Treating Substance Abuse and Mental Health Issues

1. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
2. With suicidality, a person fantasizes about suicide, or makes a plan to carry it out.
3. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.
4. Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home.
5. A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient’s own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate.

I’m giving Greenleaf a five-star rating not for what they are presently, but for what I believe they could be. Speaking from the experience I had as a patient for a week and a half, there are many good people on staff here. However, the doctors they contract need to do less prescribing and more listening. A 5-minute conversation will not suffice to understand somebody enough to give them mind-altering psychotropics/SSRIs, etc. A little more love goes a long way and I hope some much-needed changes are made to help the patients that come here. It’s about the one-of-a-kind stories that define the lives of people we all know, sharing the aching humor and the meaning that comes with a life in recovery.

Personal Amenities

During my 17-day stay, I encountered severe abuse and mistreatment from the nursing staff that left me physically and emotionally scarred.From the very beginning, I was subjected to unimaginable cruelty. The nurses not only punched and kicked me but also went so far as to spit in my face. On one occasion, they slammed my foot in a door, causing excruciating pain. This coercive practice made me feel helpless and trapped, adding to the overwhelming sense of fear and anxiety I was already experiencing.One of the most horrifying aspects of my stay was the behavior of Nurse Tammy. She repeatedly violated me, twisting my nipples and committing other unspeakable acts when she believed no one was watching. This level of abuse was not only physically painful but also deeply humiliating and degrading.

Disorders & Addictions Treated

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing. Adolescents receive the treatment they need for mental health disorders and addiction, with the added support of educational and vocational services. One aspect of this rehab that I thought was notable was that they have separate units for substance abuse versus mental health.

Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation. They provide 12 Step meetings, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), emotion-focused therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and interpersonal counseling. I had an alright time here but some of the staff there honestly makes the place better. I was in the Oak unit and I had the best treatment by Brittney, Bailey, and Shay.
